Rensselaer Falls uncertain about village Trustee elections

RENSSELAER FALLS — With the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections unable to declare winners in various local write-in campaigns, Rensselaer Falls is one village that is uncertain about the future of its Board of Trustees.

Two of its members were up for re-election, and neither was officially on the ballot.

Village Clerk Esther B. Gushea said, “The board of elections said there were 45 write-ins.” i

“Whoever is elected will be sworn in at the December meeting,” Ms. Gushea said.

Connie S. McAllister said she is confident she will be re-elected.

“I have every reason to imagine that I will be re-elected,” she said, adding that she spoke with friends, family and local residents about writing her in.

Travis W. Dox, the other village trustee up for re-election, was unavailable for comment.

“At the earliest we’ll start the process (of counting ballots Friday),” said Thomas A. Nichols, Republican commissioner of the Board of Elections.

He warned that it is more than likely the final results will not be available until next week.

Rep. William L. Owens’s campaign filed a lawsuit Monday that blocks the Board of Elections from officially declaring a winner until all the ballots are hand-counted.
