MASSENA – Mrs. Eula D. Colby, 99, of 215 Andrews Street, passed away Friday morning, November 9, 2012 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena.
Eula was born April 29, 1913 in Canton, the daughter of the late Edna Floss Price and A. Murray Dodds. She graduated from Canton High School in 1933, Potsdam Normal School in 1936 and took courses at Cornell University. On August 23, 1943, she married F. Kenneth Colby in Canton, he predeceased her on December 4, 1994.
She taught for several years at Canton Elementary School. Mrs. and Mrs. Colby moved to Massena and worked at the A&P Store. Mrs. Colby worked at the store for 26 years and her husband retired from A&P after 36 years when the store closed in 1975. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross for over 25 years, worked on the Election Board for over 15 years and was a 4H leader for over 12 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of over 60 years. She was a longtime member of the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ and the Sweet Adelines. She and her late husband were avid square dancers for over 40 years. Eula enjoyed genealogy and did an extensive study on her Dodds ancestors. She also enjoyed flowers and doing yard work.
She is survived by her longtime dear friend, Mable Harwood of Massena; five nephews, Richard E. Garrett, Jr. of Victor, NY; Robert Dodds of Avoca, NY; Malcolm Dodds of Malone, NY; Donald Dodds of Odgensburg, NY; and David Dodds of Haines City, FL. She is also survived by many great nieces and great nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Eunice Garrett and two brothers, Jay and Ralph Dodds.
Friends may call Sunday 1-4 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Monday 11:00 AM with Rev. Judy VanKennan, officiating. The members of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial ritual service Sunday at 3:30 PM. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Canton.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ Memorial Fund or the Order of the Eastern Star.
