Canton-Potsdam hospital receives approval for expansion

POTSDAM — Canton-Potsdam Hospital has received permission from the village Planning Board to begin work on a 20,000-square-foot expansion to its 49 Lawrence Ave. campus.

The hospital still needs to receive state approval and is continuing engineering work to make sure the building remains within the alloted $5.5 million budget, but work will probably begin before the end of the year, according to Richard D. Jacobs, vice president of finance.

“Hopefully we can get the ground broke on this sometime in the December time frame,” he said.

The facility will be funded through the hospital’s $14 million cash reserve. The plan has already been approved by the St. Lawrence County Planning Board.

The village Planning Board had two minor issues with the proposed site plan: the placement of a sidewalk and ensuring the site had proper drainage. Both matters were resolved in a brief meeting Monday night.

The hospital extension, which is designed by Lavallee Brensinger, a Manchester, N.H., architectural firm, will house 10 primary care physicians and an urgent care center. It is part of the hospital’s plan to recruit physicians, and to continue to expand its coverage at 49 Lawrence Ave.

“This is just another phase in our plan for that real estate,” Mr. Jacobs said.

Construction on the building will continue throughout the winter, and it is slated for completion by Aug. 1.
