Saturday night Christmas cheer in Ogdensburg

OGDENSBURG - It was the Miracle on Ford Street here Saturday night.

The second annual Ogdensburg and Lisbon Lions Club-sponsored Light Up The Night Parade shone its color-splashed way down Ford Street, with 63 holiday-themed floats on display and a call to attention for local charities such as Toys for Tots, The Salvation Army, the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA, the Ogdensburg Neighborhood Center, and PJ’s for Christmas.

Hundreds of people - mostly families with young children - lined the downtown corridor of Ford Street on what was a comfortably brisk evening. Many homes along the parade route added to the festive atmosphere with Christmas lights and holiday decorations on display.

“It’s just bringing the spirit of Christmas to the kids,” said Lisbon Lions publicist Cathy M. Amell.

The parade began at Roethel’s, 1801 Ford St., and proceeded west downtown past City Hall to the Ogdensburg Mall parking lot.

After the parade, children and their parents lined up in City Hall to have their picture taken with Santa Claus.

Five-year-old Alicia Gordon, of Ogdensburg, was waiting for the big guy on the steps of City Hall an hour before the parade got started.

“I want to see Santa,” she said. “I’m going to ask him for a piano.”

Mrs. Amell said last year’s debut of the nighttime parade “was huge” with more than 60 floats and about 300 children lining up to visit Santa.

She is sure that an annual Ogdensburg tradition is already firmly established.

“If we can keep it going,” Mrs. Amell said.

Other events held Saturday in the city to tie into the parade festivities included a dinner at Wallace E. Rock Amvets Post 19, the 24th annual Thanksgiving craft show and sale at Kennedy Elementary School and a spaghetti dinner at the Elk’s Lodge on Caroline Street.
