SLIC receives grant for fiber network


NICHOLVILLE — Empire State Development’s board of directors has approved an Innovation Economy Matching Grant for Slic Network Solutions Inc.

Empire State Development is providing $2,225,033 in assistance toward a $30 million project to construct 660 miles of fiber-optic cable to bring advanced broadband services, including voice and IPTV services, to 5,856 unserved households in St. Lawrence County.

The project began in September 2010 and is expected to be complete in March 2014.

Slic also is constructing 136 miles of fiber-optic cable and purchasing the necessary equipment and electronics to bring advanced broadband services, including voice and IPTV, to 726 unserved households in remote western Franklin County.

Empire State Development is providing a grant of $425,987 toward that $5.75 million project, which also is expected to be complete in March 2014.

Slic is a for-profit company based in Nicholville that was formed in 1995 as an Internet service provider.

It has developed and managed fiber-optic networks in Canton, Potsdam and Massena to provide voice and data services primarily to commercial customers.

Customers include hospitals, school districts, banks, St. Lawrence County government, municipal governments, fire departments and police departments.
