Five-year-old Talula H. O’Brien glued colored paper feathers to a round, brown paper face decorated with a smile.

She looked up at her mother, grinning broadly.

“Now it’s a turkey,” said Lauren V. Gilmour, Morristown.

Ms. Gilmour wore two hats at the scene of her daughter’s creation, a Thanksgiving-themed children’s art class at Kid’s Place education center of the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 323 Washington St. In addition to being a proud mother, she is education specialist at the museum.

The event provided the children a good idea of what they and their families will be observing at the dinner table Thursday.

Sort of.

“It means that we catch turkeys,” said Taylor S. Cutway, 5, of Brier Hill, Talula’s cousin.

All fun aside, Ms. Gilmour said, even the youngest of the children know a thing or two about the holiday they were celebrating Sunday with their colorful art.

“They all come in here with an understanding,” she said. “They understand that it’s for family.”

Denise N. McPherson, Ogdensburg, is pretty certain that her son, Parker K.M. Remi, 2, has an understanding of Thanksgiving that might need a little work.

He was darting from room to room at the museum so quickly it was difficult to get him to sit still long enough to explain himself.

His mother spoke for him.

“We came in here the other day and he tried to draw a turkey,” Ms. McPherson said.

Parker ran off.

“I did it for him,” she said.
