Chief: robbery not suspected in Saranac Lake shooting

SARANAC LAKE — A 55-year-old man who claimed to have been robbed and shot this week may actually have turned the gun on himself, Saranac Lake Police Chief Bruce G. Nason said.

“Further investigation has revealed no robbery has occurred,” Chief Nason said of the Tuesday evening incident. “It’s looking more like it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

The chief said police no longer were looking for suspects Wednesday. He declined to release the man’s name, but said that the man underwent surgery and that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Following a 6:45 p.m. 911 call Tuesday, officers found the victim on a train trestle near Pine Street. The man told police he was walking beside the tracks when he encountered two men. He said one of the men brandished a gun, police said.

The victim told police that he was shot in the left shoulder, and that one of the suspects removed money from his pocket.
