RENSSELAER FALLS – After over six months of construction, the village will once again be connected.

St. Lawrence County Highway Department crews expect to open the County Route 14 bridge over the Oswegatchie River to traffic on Nov. 30. The project, which began in June, involved demolishing the old truss-style bridge, which had corroded over time and replacing it with a one-pier, steel structure with a concrete deck.

There is still a little more work to do, but things are shaping up “wonderfully,” county Highway Superintendent Toby Bogart said.

“They are going to be testing the sewer main, and finishing up the sidewalks and maybe a couple of sections of guide rails,” said Mr. Bogart. “The paving is done and soon crews will begin the restoration of the lawn areas affected by the building of the bridge.”

The approximately $3 million project will be 80 percent paid for by federal funds, 15 percent by state funds and 5 percent by the county. Mr. Bogart said the project will be completed “on schedule and on budget.”

“It’s been a very smooth project,” he said. “We’re proud of it. It’s a beautiful bridge with big abutments and a center pier made to look like laid up stone that goes with the nature of the original history of the village.”

Mayor Jeffrey M. Dollinger said he and several village members are looking forward to reconnecting the village once again. Removing the bridge crossing meant an additional detour of seven miles for some residents.

“I know some of the residents from village meetings said it was a little bit of hassle, but everyone seemed to manage,” he said.
