Traffic counts filed in accident that killed Amish baby

LOWVILLE — The motorist involved in a Tuesday morning accident in which an Amish baby girl died has been cited by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department with two traffic infractions.

Lacey E. Northrup, 27, Lowville, has been summoned to Harrisburg Town Court to face charges of following too closely and failing to exercise due caution when approaching a horse.

The vehicle struck an Amish buggy operated by the baby’s mother at about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday on Route 12 near Vary Road in the town of Harrisburg.

“Primary cause would be driver inattention,” saidUndersheriff James M. Monnat.

Mr. Monnat said the identities of the 9-month-old baby and her mother will not be disclosed “because of the private lives of the Amish.”

The baby, with head and internal injuries, was flown by Mercy Flight Central to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where she died. Her mother suffered a minor leg injury. Ms. Northrup was not injured.

The Countryside Veterinary Clinic euthanized the horse.

State police, Lowville firefighters and the Lewis County Search and Rescue team assisted at the accident scene.

It was the second serious crash in four months involving a buggy on Route 12 in Lewis County. In August, another driver faced similar charges after his car struck a buggy in Lowville, killing the horse and leaving a young Amish man with cuts and bruises.
