Bassett leads South Jeff to hoop win

Tom Bassett scored 17 points to lead South Jefferson to a 52-42 win over Syracuse Institute of Technology in a nonleague game in Adams.

Jacob Worden added 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for South Jefferson (1-0) in the season opener for both schools.

The Spartans took control by outscoring the Eagles 30-9 in the first half.

Kyseem Robinson scored a game-high 19 points for SIT (0-1).


MCKINNEY COMMITS

Brad McKinney, a junior at Watertown High School, has verbally committed to attend Syracuse University in 2014-15 for lacrosse.

As a sophomore, McKinney tallied 35 goals and 23 assists for the Cyclones, earning first-team Frontier League All-Star and Times All-North honors.

A three-sport athlete, McKinney also competes in soccer and swimming for Watertown.

A member of the Sweetlax lacrosse club, McKinney also considered the University at Albany and Rutgers University, according to Watertown boys lacrosse coach Brian Navarra.


CROSS COUNTRY

Pierce places 47th at Regional

Laura Pierce, Canton-Lisbon’s two-time Northern Conference Female Runner of the Year, placed 47th at the Nike New York-Northeast Regional race at Bowdoin Park in Wappinger Falls.

Pierce, a Lisbon Central junior, logged a 5-kilometer time of 19 minutes, 37.8 seconds in the 155-runner field.

Mary Cain, a Bronxville Central junior, led the field in 17:42.6 followed by Bella Burda, an Arlington Central sophomore who also represented the Jacovino cross country racing team.

MEN’S HOCKEY

WESLEYAN 9, SUNY CANTON 2

Nick Craven scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Wesleyan to a non-conference win over SUNY Canton game in Middletown, Conn.

Wesleyan (2-2) scored the first three goals of the game and outshot the Kangaroos 36-13.

Donald Kleckner scored one goal with three assists for Wesleyan.

Ryan White, Eric Casey, William Choi, Jaren Taenaka and Adam Kaiser also tallied goals.

Brad Wilson and Vance Bridgman each scored one goal and assisted on one goal for SUNY Canton (3-6).
