OGDENSBURG Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2936 Past Commander Lester M. Duvall has spent the past week asking for donations from businesses.
He is trying to collect money to reopen the post at 525 Caroline St. The post closed last month after it failed to pay its electric, gas and phone bills. Mr. Duvall said he doesnt mind going door to door in the cold if it means the post will remain open.
Right now we need enough to get inside the building, and get the power and the gas back on, he said.
Mr. Duvall said the post owes $3,000.
Its a long road, he said. Its going to take a lot of work, and we need any support anybody is willing to offer.
The group plans to hold raffles, sell poppies and hold a jamboree in January in order to cover its debts.
We cant use the building, however, until we get the funds to reopen it, said Mr. Duvall. Its getting cold out there, and we need to heat the building.
Mr. Duvall said the pipes have been drained and shut off.
The group will also hold a meeting for members at 6 p.m. Dec. 6. Mr. Duvall is hoping to also recruit new members at the meeting.
We need all the members to attend, said Mr. Duvall. We are having elections that night. But we also need to see if we can get some more members, like Iraq War veterans. I appreciate women veterans giving me a call as well.
Donations may be sent to VFW Post 2936, 525 Caroline St., Ogdensburg, N.Y., 13669, or to 7351 Route 68, Ogdensburg.
