Watertown’s tree lighting set for Friday

The city of Watertown’s annual tree lighting ceremony has been slated for 5:15 p.m. Friday on Public Square.

The holiday festivities will begin with a performance by the Jefferson Singers from Jefferson Community College, the Islanders Barbershop Chorus and the Northern Blend Chorus. Mayor Jeffrey E. Graham and members of the City Council will host the ceremony.

Following the choral performances, Mayor Graham will turn on the city’s Christmas tree lights-and-music display at 6 p.m. The display features thousands of LED lights that are synchronized to a variety of holiday songs. It will run every 30 minutes from 4:30 until 10 p.m. daily through Jan. 2.

Santa Claus will greet children in the Public Square gazebo from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.

Council members are asking that residents bring non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to donate to the Watertown Urban Mission. A collection site will be set up.

Beginning at 3 Friday, all travel lanes on the north side of Public Square will be closed to traffic and on-street parking will be restricted. Temporary barricades, traffic cones and signs will be placed and a detour route will be established.
