FORT DRUM — The post has confirmed that Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend will be its new commander.

Gen. Townsend, who serves as director of the Pakistan and Afghanistan Coordination Cell Joint Staff, Washington, D.C., will replace Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley at a change of command ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the post’s Magrath Sports Complex.

The assignment will be a return to post for Gen. Townsend. From 2000 to 2002, he served as commander of the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and he was the 10th Mountain Division’s assistant chief of staff from June 2003 to July 2004. Other prominent stops for Gen. Townsend include a stint as deputy commanding general of operations for the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.

On Nov. 15, Gen. Milley was nominated by President Barack Obama to lead Fort Hood, Texas, and its III Corps, along with a promotion to lieutenant general. Both the assignment and promotion will require Senate confirmation. The assignment is the first for Gen. Milley at the central Texas installation, near Killeen. He will replace Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell Jr., who will become commanding general for U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany.
