CANTON - Canton overcame Massena as the High School Girls Hockey season officially got underway Wednesday night. Salon River downed St. Lawrence Central 4-2 in the other game of the night.

Canton 5, Massena 4 (OT): The host Lady Bears rallied from a 4-1 deficit then generated the game-winning goal in the closing seconds of overtime. The Lady Raiders worked their way to a 2-0 lead through the first period on goals by Katie MacCuaig and Bailey Dillabough. Blake Orosz made it 2-1 at 2:52 of the second period off an assist from Margret Troiano but the Lady Raiders regrouped to produce the next two goals from Rachael Davis and Abbie Paquin.

The Lady Bears closed the second period with two goals in the final 3:14. Troiano finished off a play set up by Mary Kait Mace and Orosz to make it 4-2 before Trioano made it a one-goal game with an unassisted goal at the 13:49 mark.

Nikki Holmes redirected a low shot from the left wing by Taylor Marcellus just inside the far post to tie the score with 2:11 remaining in regulation and Orosz completed the Canton comeback when her shot from the middle of the slot found its way through a scramble and into the back of the next with just 3.9 seconds remaining in OT. Holmes drew the lone assist on the game-winner.

Eighth-grader Elizabeth Burke turned aside 19 shots to win her varsity goaltending debut while freshman Maddi Dillabough had 35 saves in the losing cause.
