LOWVILLE Lewis County sheriffs deputies have identified the driver involved in a hit-and-run accident Thursday evening.
The driver contacted the Sheriffs Department on Friday after the department issued a statement seeking information on the crash, according to Undersheriff James M. Monnat.
Deputies had not interviewed the man, whom they would not identify, as of Friday afternoon.
According to Mr. Monnat, the driver, operating a gray Ford pickup truck, was traveling north on Route 12 near Nefsey Road in the town of Lowville when he struck an Amish buggy at approximately 8 p.m. He immediately fled the scene without stopping, leaving vehicle pieces on the road.
The buggy sustained extensive damage, but neither of its occupants a man and his wife nor the horse were injured.
Deputies said the investigation is continuing and charges are likely.
