FORT DRUM — About 1,400 soldiers from the post’s 1st Brigade Combat Team will head to Afghanistan early next year, according to a statement from the Department of Defense.

“Another great Brigade from our Division will answer the nation’s call as the 1st Brigade Combat Team Warriors will deploy to help build the capacity of our Afghan partners,” said Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, the post and 10th Mountain Division commander, in a released statement.

Maj. Joshua T. Jacques, 10th Mountain Division’s deputy public affairs officer, said the soldiers will deploy as a security force assistance brigade aiding Afghan security forces and leave in early 2013. He would not identify where in Afghanistan the brigade will serve.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team last deployed from March 2010 to March 2011.

“The Warrior Brigade is fully prepared for our upcoming deployment to Afghanistan,” said Col. Stephen Michael, the brigade’s commander, in the statement. “We are trained and ready to execute this mission on behalf of our nation.”

The mission for the brigade is the same as the one for soldiers from the post’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team. About 1,500 soldiers from that brigade will leave early next year.

The brigade is one of three large units whose deployments were announced late Friday afternoon. Also listed in the statement were the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky., and the 101st Airborne Division’s headquarters.
