Remingtion holiday gala a volunteer effort

The 29th annual Frederic Remington Art Museum “Winter Wonderland” holiday gala on Dec. 8 is about gaiety, celebration, fun and raising funds for the 303 Washington St. shrine to the late, legendary north country Renaissance man.

It is also a joyous acknowledgement of the men and women who organize the event.

Museum Executive Director Edward J. LaVarnway appreciates them all.

“We have a cadre of dedicated volunteers,” he said. “This is the most important annual fundraiser.”

The gala’s signature silent auction is, according to Mr. LaVarnway, the “vehicle” for the fundraising. The total has risen annually in recent years. The 2011 event raised $20,097.

Gala chairwoman Glory P. Martel agrees that the event “is a major fundraiser for the museum.”

But it’s also a time for fun.

“Where else can you find a night of food, music, dancing, friends and shopping all rolled into one?” she said. “Maybe you are looking for a unique gift for someone hard to buy for. There will be plenty of wonderful items for the silent auction that will be available from the start of the gala to the finish.”

Music will be provided by Lester Gates and Double Axle.

Portrait photography will be provided by House of Photography and Imagery.

Trevor Brunet of Simplicity Cafe, Ogdensburg, will serve gourmet appetizers and desserts. The Place, Ogdensburg, will tend to a cash bar.

Tickets for $10 each or five for $40 will be sold for a drawing for Mr. Remington’s 1911 Collier’s magazine-published print, “Benighted for a Dry Camp.”

Tickets for the gala are $50 for members and $55 for non-members. For reservations, call the museum at 393-2425 or send a check there.

The gala will be followed Dec. 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. by an open house at the museum.
