M-W Repeats Dinneen Tourney Championship

MADRID - Some basketball games are won below the rim and some are won above the rim.

The spark to Madrid-Waddington’s 78-51 victory over Brushton-Moira in Friday’s championship game of the John Dinneen Memorial Tournament came on the floor.

Trailing 44-39 after the Panthers’ Zach Burnett buried back to back three-pointers early in the third quarter, the Yellowjackets ignited an explosive comeback by diving for control of loose balls in gaining a 50-45 lead after three quarters and then raced away with a 28-point fourth quarter. In the midst of the frantic tempo point guard Colin O’Bryan cooly completed a near triple double with 23 points, which included an 8-8 showing from the free throw line, nine rebounds, nine steals and six assists.

“Our defense definitely got us going in that third quarter where they got into some foul trouble. In the fourth quarter our big men got going with key putbacks,” said M-W Coach Aaron Jones.

Terry Crump had a big game inside, Greg Thompson got some big rebounds, Colin O’Bryan gave us great leadership and Richard Wright hit some big shots.”

Crump finished with 10 points, Thompson grabbed six rebounds and Wright grabbed three steals to go along with 15 points which featured 5-6 free throw shooting. Jacob Barney netted six of 10 free throws showing 11 points and T.J. Gagnon added five points.

Zach Burnett buried six three-pointers leading B-M with 18 points, Justin LaVarnway followed with 15 and Alex Burnett netted eight.

Tupper Lake won the consolation game over Norwood-Norfolk and M-W repeated as the tournament’s JV champions.

Tupper Lake 58 - N-N 26: Anson Gagnier netted 10 free throws scoring 13 points, Mitch Keniston and Brock Tarbox each scored 11 points and Cody LaPierre tallied three three-pointers scoring nine points to lead TL. Dan Devin and Garrett Waite combined for nine and seven points leading N-N.

M-W JV’s Repeat: The Madrid-Waddington JV’s repeated as tournament champions in a 53-21 victory over Brushton-Moira. Aaron Armstrong and David Odenhaul each scored 10 points for the Jackets and Michael Thew netted nine.Tayler Tallman scored 11 points for B-M.

OTHER GAMES

In other boys basketball action on Friday, Colton-Pierrepont outscored Clifton-Fine 50-28 and host St. Regis Falls downed Salmon River at the Brady Frazier Memorial Tournament and Chateaugay stopped St. Lawrence Central 62-55.

C-P 50, C-F 28: Zack Farr tossed through a game-high 15 points, including three three-pointers, followed by Brent Hoyt with 10. Carl Twyman led C-F with 10 points.

Chateaugay 62, SLC 55: The Larries got off to a promising start, outscoring the Bulldogs 20-15 in the first quarter but were unable to hold on for the win.

Zane Ramsdell led the way for SLC with 19 points followed by Josh White with 16, Noah Bowes led the Bulldogs with a game-high 33 points.
