Islanders skate to opening win at home

CLAYTON — Evan Dier and Nick McCabe each finished with one goal and one assist to help lift the Islanders to a 2-0 season-opening nonleague hockey victory over visiting Canton.

Trevor Hughes also recorded an assist, and goalie Cole James stopped 21 shots for the Islanders, which include players from Alexandria and Thousand Islands schools.

Jake Watson made 21 saves for Canton.

SUFFERN 4, MASSENA 1

John Costa scored two goals as Suffern knocked off Massena in the season opener at the West Genesee Tournament at Camillus.

Kevin Hill and Justin Tiso also scored for Suffern.

Brantley Adams scored for Massena.

VOLLEYBALL

BEAVER RIVER 3, SOUTH LEWIS 1

Madison Compton led the defense with 17 digs as the Beavers captured a 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19 Frontier League “C” Division victory over the Falcons (1-1) at Beaver Falls.

Keanna Proulx distributed 10 assists, and Genevieve Fidler hit nine kills for Beaver River (2-0).

LOWVILLE 3, THOUSAND ISLANDS 0

Tasha Widrick handed out 27 assists to help lift the Red Raiders to a 25-21, 26-24, 25-21 “C” Division victory at Clayton.

Rachael Waite registered 15 kills, while Haley Riley finished with nine kills and seven digs, and Erica Lucas added nine digs for Lowville (1-1).

Chloe Mason recorded six blocks, Megan Ferguson served five aces, and Autumn Dutcher hit four kills for Thousand Islands (0-2).

WHITESBORO 3, WATERTOWN 0

Carly Lonczak generated 20 assists and eight digs as the Warriors opened their season with a 25-15, 25-16, 25-12 nonleague victory over the host Cyclones.

Brandi Blaszek added six aces, six kills and four blocks for Whitesboro, and Maria Sullivan had nine kills and seven digs.

Porsha Gathers-Grossett supplied two blocks and two kills for Watertown (1-1).

CARTHAGE 3, INDIAN RIVER 0

On Thursday, Courtney Cunningham supplied six kills, three aces and five digs to lead the Comets to a 25-17, 25-18, 25-15 season-opening Frontier League victory at Philadelphia.

Carly Sullivan finished with seven assists, and Nikki Wormwood hit four kills for Carthage.

Asia Bliss and Meaghan LaClair each recorded three kills for Indian River.
