Cody Ayers scored a pair of goals in the second period as Danbury pounced early to defeat Thousand Islands 4-1 on Saturday in a Federal Hockey League game before 923 fans at the Duffy Fairgrounds arena.
Thousand Islands outshot Danbury 23-13 in the middle period but fell behind 4-0 as Ayers scored his goals less than three minutes apart. He scored at 12 minutes, 33 seconds of the second, then followed with a power-play goal at 15:24. Danbury received the man advantage after the Privateers Corey Bellamy went off for a pair of minor penalties and a game misconduct.
Thirty-eight penalties were handed out for a total of 192 minutes. The two teams incurred their first penalties four seconds into the game when a fight broke out.
Danbury scored its first goal on a power play shot by Paul DAgostino 1:16 into the first period. The Whalers (7-7) scored again at 16:34 on a goal by Mike Atkinson.
Thousand Islands Kris McCarthy thwarted Danburys shutout bid with a goal 8:52 into the final period.
Danburys Mike Brown made 43 saves. TIs Mike Anthony stopped 42 shots.
