Massena girls outlast SLC in basketball season debut


MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls basketball team relayed the momentum of a 19-8 second-quarter run into a 57-46 NAC interdivisional win at home over St. Lawrence Central in the 2012-13 season debut for both squads on Monday.

Alisha Jacobs tossed through 16 points, including a trio of three-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists to anchor a balanced Lady Raider effort. Sydney Thompson tallied 15 points, six rebounds and two steals while Marissa Manley worked the paint for 14 points and 12 rebounds as Massena stretched a 12-10 lead by the end of the first quarter into a 31-18 halftime lead. Samanntha Villnave contributed six points and nine boards toward the winning effort. Robin Boudreau (2 rebounds) and Erin Francis chipped in two points apiece while Dominique Valancius (6 rebounds) closed out the Massena scoresheet with a point and Maeve Curran came off the bench to generate three rebounds.

Breanna Vatter fired through a game-high 22 points, including four three-pointers, to pace the Lady Larries. Lindsey Thayer added 13 points followed by Jenna Kesner (4 assists) with six, Sam Richards (7 rebounds) with four and Noelle Rufa with two. Thayer also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds while Caitlyn Grow pulled down another 10 boards.

Massena JV’s 50, SLC JV’s 27: Jaylee Jones and Jessica Rode netted 15 points apiece to lead the winning effort.

Haleigh Agans and Breana Evans led SLC with eight points each.

Massena makes its NAC Central Division debut on Friday at home against Canton while SLC opens the North Division season at Brushton-Moira.
