HEUVELTON Two pets perished in a Tuesday morning fire that destroyed a modular home on County Route 4 and left a family of seven homeless.
The 10 a.m. blaze destroyed the 28-by-78 foot double wide dwelling at 628 Route 4 in Heuvelton, St. Lawrence County Fire Investigator Gerald H. Mack said. While the fire remained under investigation Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Mack said evidence pointed toward an accidental cause. Two children and two adults were home at the time of the fire, Mr. Mack said.
There were no injuries, but a dog and a cat were killed, he said.
The home, owned by Tim Simmons, was a total loss, county sheriffs deputies said, although it was insured. Heuvelton firefighters responded to the fire, aided by crews from Morristown and Lisbon, with firefighters from Waddington, Brier Hill and Rensselaer Falls on standby.
Kelly E. Hecker, Red Cross of Northern New Yorks emergency services manager, said her agency was providing immediate assistance to the family. Anyone who is interested in providing additional assistance to the family may contact the agencys Watertown office at 782-4410, Ms. Hecker said.
