OFA, Malone Set Up Early Showdown


Ogdensburg Free Academy will make the long trip to Malone on Friday for a boys basketball game which may go a long way toward deciding the NAC Central Division title.Both teams sustained early season momentum by climbing to 3-0 on Monday by winning their Central Division openers at home. OFA raced past Gouverneur 93-38 and Malone downed defending champion Potsdam 55-35.

OFA 93 - Gouverneur 38: The Blue Devils sprinted into their home season breaking to a 31-4 first quarter lead with lightning quick ball movement in their fastbreak. Matt Piercey (5 rebounds) scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter and passed out a game-high seven assists and collected five steals and Breton LaRose (four rebounds, four assists) buried three threes in the first en rout to a 19-point effort. Cavan LaRose scored six of his 10 points and passed out five assists. Tyler Knowlton led a nice showing by the reserves with 11 points. “We had a very good team effort, 26 assists means we passed the ball well and found the open man. I thought we ran the floor better than we did this weekend,” said OFA Coach Mark Henry.

“We need to focus on taking care of the ball and the little things as we prepare for Malone on Friday which will be a big test.”

Colin Ross scored eight points played a key role on the transition offense with five rebounds along with sophomore Jack Manke who grabbed 10 rebounds. Pat Cosmo followed with eight points and four assists with Seth Pinkerton (4 rebounds) and Alex Farrell each scoring six points.

Mark Horne tallied 10 points for Gouverneur and Dustin Hutton and Troy Gates each netted seven.

OFA JV’s 61 - Gouverneur 23: The OFA JV’s won their debut under Coach Scott Sargent. Tristan Moore and Peyton Lalone paced the scoring with 11 and eight points and Jordan Miller, Justin Ross and Al Fisher all scored seven. Nick Sweeney netted six. Spencer Knowles led Gouverneur with eight points.

Malone 55 - Potsdam 35: The Huskies used a tenacious half-court defense to beat Potsdam for the first time in over 10 years.

Malone was led by Jon Dunlavey’s 15 points while Mitchell Gallagher followed with 11 points and both grabbed nine rewbounds. Konnor Bigwarfe led Potsdam with 11 points and Shawn Clark (2 breakup dunks) and Owen Mitchell eachnetted six .points.

Canton 65 - SR 38: Nick Archibald and Bryant Wentworth both scored 14 points for the Bears.

12 and 10. Josh Hynes led Salmon River with 16 points as Kiio Jacobs followed with 10 points.
