MASSENA - The Massena village Board of Trustees has approved the hiring of a new Massena police officer.

The board voted unanimously to support the retirement of Patrolman William J. LaShomb. His position will be filed by Ian M. Vanier, a Massena resident who currently serves with the Ogdensburg Police Department.

Mr. LaShomb retirement will be effective as of Jan. 31, 2013, and the start date for his replacement, Mr. Vanier, has not been finalized.
