Potsdam, Salmon River girls basketball teams drop Central Division openers

The Potsdam Central and Salmon River varsity girls basketball teams opened the 2012-13 NAC Central Division season on a losing note Tuesday night.

Franklin Academy 52, Potsdam 50: At the Potsdam gym, the visiting Lady Huskies scored the final four points of regulation to send the teams into overtime tied at 43-43 before going on to survive a battle of free throws down the stretch.

Sarah Vivlamore sparked the Lady Sandstoners offensively with a career-high 27-point night that included five three-pointers. Shanielle Chambers tossed through another 17 followed by Taylor Bonno with four and Bre Sapp with two.

Janelle Heden anchored the winning offense with 16 points, including a pair of three’s. Meghan O’Connor and Rachel Lamica chipped in 11 points apiece followed by Erin McDonald with six and Emily Marshall with four. Morgan Fountain and Kirstin Barrett closed out the FA scoresheet with two points each.

The Lady Sandstoners (0-2) are slated to host Massena next Tuesday starting with the JV contest at 5:30 p.m.

Canton 61, Salmon River 44: At Canton’s Jerry Hourihan Gym, the host Lady Bears steadily pulled away from a 24-21 halftime lead in posting the convincing win over the two-time Section 10 Class B champion Lady Shamrocks.

Kwiio King netted a team-high 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the losing effort. Abby Kelly added 15 points and eight rebounds. Jaiden Mitchell finished with nine points, four assists and three steals while Taylor Francis contributed five points and Peighton Laffin accounted for the other Salmon River point.

Emma Rexford fired through 29 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the winning effort. Kali Frank added nine points followed by Katie Christy and Tori Daley with eight points each. Jamie DiSalvo, Rachel Huntley and Taylor Reed chipped in two points apiece while Emily Pinckney scored the other Canton point.

The Lady Shamrocks (1-1) are slated to host Central Division rival Gouverneur on Friday while Canton (2-0) travels to Massena.

In the other Central Division opener on Tuesday, OFA dropped Gouverneur 43-29 while West Division action saw Heuvelton turn back Hermon-DeKalb 51-47, Hammond overwhelm Morristown 68-5, Clifton-Fine outscore Lisbon 65-45 and Harrisville host Edwards-Knox.

OFA 43, Gouverneur 29: In Gouverneur, the visiting Lady Blue Devils raced out to a 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter then held off the Lady Wildcats for the win.

Susie Morrow paced OFA with 13 points followed by Felicia Barr with 10, Meg Dodge with seven and Shannon Tooley with six.

Kristin Roberts led Gouverneur with 10 points. Noelle Carbone and Danielle McCormick each added five.
