Bernard H. Brown today was named the winner of the 2012 Shapiro Award, given annually by the North Country Chamber of Commerce.
The award was announced at 3 p.m. in the rotunda of the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown.
Mr. Brown is the chief executive officer of the Bernier Carr Group in Watertown. He graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Construction Management Degree in 1980 and from SUNY at Delhi with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in 1973. He has been with the firm since 1984.
He has been involved with a number of non-profit groups such as the American Heart Association and the Northern New York Community Foundation. He has guided his company to work closely with the Disabled Persons Action Organization, Jefferson Rehabilitation Center, Credo, North Country Transitional Living, the Mental Health Association of Jefferson County, Victims Assistance Center of Jefferson County, the Development Association of the North Country, Clayton Improvement Association and Frontier Housing Corp.
The award was established by Arnold I. Shapiro to honor the memory of his father, a long time business leader in the community. A director of the Chamber at the time of his fathers death in 1952, Mr. Shapiro sensed a need in Watertown for a symbolic annual recognition of exceptional leadership on behalf of our city. Over the years, the award has been presented to many deserving individuals for their contributions and service to our community.
This award is made on the basis of outstanding citizenship or for outstanding contribution in civic or social welfare activity. Entries were judged on five key areas (outstanding citizenship, achievement, leadership, dedication, and motivation) by a panel of past Shapiro Recipients.
The award will be presented formally at the Chambers annual dinner on Thursday, Feb.7 at the Hilton Garden Inn.
