LOWVILLE Lewis County sheriffs deputies have charged a Carthage man in connection with an alleged hit-and-run accident Thursday evening involving an Amish buggy.
After turning himself in Tuesday evening, Steven J. Waite, 50, of 21441 County Route 47, was charged with leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, leaving the scene of an accident involving injury to an animal, speed not reasonable or prudent, following too closely and failure to use due care when approaching a horse. He is to answer the charges in Lowville Town Court.
Deputies said Mr. Waite was driving a Ford pickup truck north on Route 12 near Nefsey Road in the town of Lowville when he struck an Amish buggy, then immediately fled the scene without stopping, leaving vehicle pieces on the road. The buggy sustained extensive damage, but neither of its occupants a man and his wife was injured, and the horse also escaped serious injury.
Sheriffs Department officials had said the driver contacted them on Friday after the department issued a statement seeking information on the crash. However, they declined to release his name until they were able to interview him and levy charges against him.
Officials in a release acknowledged those who contacted the department with information about the crash and assisted with the investigation.
