OFA wrestlers outlast Massena in NAC season opener


MASSENA - The Massena Central wrestling team overcame a 24-point deficit but was denied a full comeback by OFA in the NAC season opener for both squads at the high school gym on Wednesday.

“We saw some good things tonight,” noted Raider coach Scott Perrine after the Raiders dropped a hard-fought 46-40 decision to the Blue Devils. “A couple of things didn’t go exactly the way we expected but our guys will learn from this.”

OFA worked its way to a 30-6 lead through the first six bouts before the Raiders battled back to take five of the next six weights and pull even at 34-34.

Nate Murdock put the Blue Devils back on top when he pinned Nunter Perrine at 4:37 after having built a 16-6 lead through the first two rounds of the 152-pound matchup. Cody Allen David then sealed the win when he pinned Thomas Clark in 1:19 at 160 pounds.

Ethan Marcello closed the meet on a positive note for the Raiders when he pinned Allen Smithers in 2:49 at 170 pounds.

Also scoring pins for Massena were; Skyler Cameron over Hayden LaRock in 1:05 at 120 pounds, Jesse Patraw over Austin Lalonde in 2:24 at 132 pounds and Landon Laughlin over Glynn Breen in just 27 seconds at 138 pounds. Isaiah Perry tied the meet at 34-34 when he worked his way to a 13-2 major decision over Bailey Phelps at 145 pounds.

The other Raider points came by way of forfeit wins for Jeremy Malone at 220 pounds and Kyle Ling at 113 pounds.

The Blue Devils notched a total of six pins on the night - Alex Cole over Joe Ferrera in 3:49 at 182 pounds, Andrew Cole over Dakota Bernard in 1:35 at 195 pounds, Brody Sheppard over Brian Plourde in 5:18 at 99 pounds and Tanner Lapiene over Michael Brown in 1:38 at 106 pounds. Adam Rickett won by major decision (15-5) over Konnor German at 126 pounds and Nate Sarkin drew the lone forfeit win of the meet for OFA at 285 pounds.

The Raiders are slated to travel to Malone on Monday to take on Franklin Academy starting at 6 p.m.

In the other season openers on Wednesday, Canton beat Clifton-Fine 50-15 and Gouverneur downed FA.
