LISBON – The votes are in, and Gary J. Jarvis has been elected to serve on the Town Council starting in January.
Mr. Jarvis, a former St. Lawrence County sheriff, will finish off the last year of C. Roger Shoens four-year term. Mr. Shoen resigned in April.
The seat will be up for grabs again next year.
Mr. Jarvis received 136 votes. Fellow candidates Marc McDonell and Patrick J. Green received 87 and 48 votes respectively.
All three men were write-in candidates.
Mr. Jarvis served on the council for four years in the late 1980s.
I would like to [swear Mr. Jarvis in] at the next board meeting, said Town Supervisor James W. Armstrong. He might just as well be part of the conversation.
Mr. Jarvis, who observed Novembers Town Council meeting, said It sounded to me like it was run pretty well.
Mr. Jarvis said he hopes to continue to ensure the council operates smoothly.
He also said he hopes he is able to use his time on the council to cut the cost of government in Lisbon and bolster the success of the Lisbon Beach and Campground.
Mr. Jarvis said his victory was the result of his efforts to ensure people got out and voted for him.
I went out and knocked on doors and talked to a lot of people, said Mr. Jarvis.
Additionally Mr. Jarvis said he gave out instructions on how to write in his name on the ballot.
A total of 14 people were written in for the position, and 290 write-ins were tallied.
The final vote, along with the names of the other write-in candidates, can be found on the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections website at www.co.st-lawrence.ny.us/data/files/departments/BoardofElections/NEW%20YORK%20CERTIFICATION.PDF.
