Canton girls hold off Salmon River Rally

CANTON -Blake Orosz scored her second goal of the game with 4:01 to play to break a 4-4 tie as Canton fended off a furious Salmon River rally to gain a 5-4 win in Wednesday’s New York State Girls Hockey action. The Golden Bears opened a 4-0 lead and then answered a string of four straight goals by the Shamrocks.

“It was a good game. We got the lead and were able to give a lot of players playing time,” said Canton Coach Anita Francis. “Our third line did a nice job.”

The Bears scored twice in the first period as Natalie Giglio connected from Kelley Coughler and Lauren Orosz connected unassisted. The lead became 4-0 in the second period as Blake Orosz and Mary Kate Mace each delivered one goal and assist and Margret Troiano passed out two assists.

The Shamrocks reeled off four straight goals. Amber Thomas and Tewasherake Barnes scored unassisted in the second period, Emily Tremblay converted fom Molly Bockway and Mallory Johnson tied the score at 4-4 from Molly Brockway with 10:29 to play.

Elizabeth Burke stopped 15 shots for Canton (2-1 league, 2-2) which dropped a 4-0 nonlegue decision to Lake Placid on Wednesday.

Abby Grant handled 33 shots in goal for SR.

In other girls action action on Wednesday Massena dowed Saranac Lake 4-1 and Potsdam bested St. Lawrence Central 4-1.
