After reading some comments on your web page written by some inhumane individuals concerning the follow-up article and charges to the driver involved in the fatal Amish buggy-car collision in Lewis County on Nov. 20, I was very angry. An Amish familys baby died because of driver inattention and failure to exercise due caution. These individuals believed it was the Amishs fault. They need to learn the facts before they start pointing fingers.
The Amish in this area where the accident occurred are my neighbors. They have bright orange slow-moving signs on their buggies as well as lights and flashers they use at night. Their horses are well trained as well, but obviously as horses are animals, the humans in the situation should be doing the thinking. There is a motor vehicle law stating due caution is to be used when any animal is involved, and horn blowing around horses on the road being led or driven is against the law.
I have seen cars pass buggies and cut in too close to the horses so they can beat the car coming in the opposite direction. Maybe some patience and reduction in speed, not only when buggies are on the road but all the time, should be in order.
God bless the Amish family who lost their baby. God help the ignorant and cruel people who wrote the horrible comments.
