HERRINGS — The village Board of Trustees decided Tuesday not to install solar panels on the municipal building on Route 3 and to request an energy audit instead.

After a review of the information provided by Fourth Coast Inc. of Clayton, Mickey G. Lehman of Bernier, Carr and Associates found that it would take 27 to 30 years to recoup the cost of the system, Mayor Richard A. Beirman and the board agreed not to go forward with the project and to request an energy audit from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority in order to reduce costs.

In other business, Mayor Beirman announced that the village tentatively has been awarded a $5,546 Local Government Records Management Improvement Fund grant from the state Archives. The mayor said the funds will be used to construct a fireproof room in the back of the village garage to “keep the archives safe.” The grant also will pay Village Clerk Nancy J. Gerber to organize the documents.
