More than 400 fourth-grade students are going to be fire safety pros by the end of the year.
The city of Watertown Fire Department is partnering with Watertown City School District, Immaculate Heart Central and the home school community to create the Three Rs fire safety program.
The three Rs are recognize, reward and replace.
Students will be taught how to recognize fire hazards, including frayed cords or missing fire extinguishers, in their homes. For each hazard identified, they will be given gift certificates for a scoop of Stewarts ice cream or a slice of Cams pizza. Parents will receive gift certificates to a local hardware store to replace the damaged or missing item.
We hope to bring awareness to make sure your homes are safe, Capt. Theodore G. Kolb said in a news release. If it takes an internal audit by someone who loves pizza and ice cream, then we have a great start, because I cant think of anyone who doesnt love pizza and ice cream.
Parents of home-schooled students may call 785-7809 to participate.
