Devils bench steps up in win versus Eagles


HAMMOND - Hammond coach Shawn Dack has high expectations with his girls basketball.

On Friday evening, Dack credited Clifton-Fine for a scrappy effort in Hammond’s 50-34 win in NAC West Division play.

“We definitely got some things to work on. Our flow wasn’t there and we didn’t switch directions like we can. But credit Clifton-Fine they scrapped and worked hard. We got into some foul trouble but our bench stepped up and came through with some good minutes,” said Dack who believes the win is a step in the right direction.

Gabby Marshall generated 10 of her 15 points in the second quarter where Hammond took a 26-18 lead. Alyssa Crosby added seven of her 11 in the fourth quarter.

Emily Bush generated nine points and played a solid defensive role against Clifton-Fine’s inside force Morgan Skeldon. Mikayla Horton, Courtney Bova, and Brianna Langtry added five, four, and four points.

Hunter Hitchman, closing in on the first 1000 varsity point basketball career in the Clifton-Fine program, finished with 15 points, three steals and four assists. Alexis Pomervillle and Morgan Skeldon (five rebounds) each added six while Delaney Kerr (seven rebounds) added four and Aly Hitchman chipped in three. Brianna Dolan added four assists and three boards.

Lisbon won 36-31 over Edwwards-Knox and Hermon-DeKalb denied Morristown 69-11 in other NAC West play.

Lisbon 36, Edwards-Knox 31: The Lady Knights outscored the Cougars 16-4 in the third quarter to overcome a 17-13 halftime deficit. Jackie Sovie generated 12 points, posted nine rebounds and nine steals to lead Lisbon. Emily Dishaw added two threes in a 10 point, two steal effort. Alex Amo (four rebounds, three steals) and Gabby Walker (four rebounds) finished with six and five points for the winners while Beth Crowley chipped in three points, two steals and two boards. Katie Smith tallied 16 points for E-K. Jadilynn Bullock added 10.

H-D 69, Morristown 11: Bridget Rust and Clarissa Davis (four three’s) each scored 14 points for H-D. Paige Whitton tallied nine points and Courtney Harrington added eight.

Morgan Stott had 19 rebounds and six points, Margo Barney chipped in 11 rebounds and six points, and Kasey O’Donnell delivered eight steals, seven assists and four points for the winners who received six from Chelsea McKay.

Bailey Holmes scored seven points while Erica Baldwin chipped in four for Morristown.
