HAMMOND - Lisbon entered the Hammond Central gymnasium on Saturday only knowing very little about their opponent aside from the fact that Red Devils were unbeaten at 2-0 in NAC West in boys basketball with wins against Morristown and Clifton-Fine.
When the Knights left, Coach Shawn Backus felt lucky to come out with a 33-26 win. We didnt play very well and Hammond worked hard defensively. Were lucky we came away with this win. Offensively, were struggling, Backus said.
Trailing 10-9 at the half, Lisbon regrouped in the third quarter and took a 24-18 lead which included a buzzer beater by Jim Robinson to end the quarter.
That basket kind of gave us some momentum. Backus said.
Robinson scored eight of his 10 points in the second half and grabbed 13 rebounds on the game. Adam Felt logged 13 points while Jake Putney chipped in six, all in the second half.
Darin Bresett scored 10 points for Hammond. Nolan Martin, Ryan Proven and Brock Tulley added four each. Payton Frisina chipped in three.
Meanwhile, Tupper Lake earned a 63-54 win over Hermon-DeKalb in non-division play and Harrisville downed Reigonapolis Notre Dame 64-62 to win its own Pirates Classic where Watertown IHC pulled away from a game Gouverneur squad in the fourth quarter to secure a 72-42 victory.
Tupper Lake 63, Hermon-DeKalb 54: Blake Tarbox stepped up for the visiting Lumberjacks dropping in a game high 29 points including five threes filling in for Mitch Keniston who got injured during the first quarter. Anson Gagnier added 20 points for the winners.
Macaulay Snell paced H-D with a game-high 27 points and three steals. Dylan Kimble added 12 points while Cody Merrick chipped in seven points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
Harrisville 64 - Notre Dame 62: Tournament MVP Joe Butts completed a 23-point, eight-rebound, seven-steal performance by converting two free throws with three seconds to play after drawing a foul on a drive to the basket.
Joey Butts really went hard to the basket in the final seconds and our guys just continue to play very aggressively in our zone defense. We have some good skills on this team, said Harrisville Coach Brian Coloney.
Justin Hartle produced an 18-point 10-rebound double-double and Nick Weir and Nate Weaver followed with seven and six points for the Pirates (3-1). Weaver joined Butts on the All-Tournament Team which also included Devin Cox of Gouverneur, Jamie Harris of Notre Dame and Jude Fusilli of Watertown IHC.
Santone and Harris combined for 15 and 12 points for Notre Dame which buried 11 threes in the game.
Watertown IHC 72 - Gouv 42: Jude Whalen deposited 16 points as the Cavaliers beat the Wildcats in the consolation game of the Harrisville tournament. Jude Fusilli added 14 points for Immaculate Heart Central (3-3).Devin Cox and Tavaris Conley both had 11 points for Gouverneur (1-3).
