This photo that appeared in the Times on Dec. 22, 1953, shows late-evening shift postal clerks at the Watertown post office rushing to sort thousands of letters, mostly holiday mail, in time for local and rural carriers to deliver the next morning. A follow-up photo that ran the day after Christmas shows the same room, its mail slots empty and the floor cleared, and notes that on Christmas day and this morning, however, an assortment of strays and last-minute greeting cards arrived for delivery. The post office, at 163 Arsenal St., is now in use as the Jefferson County Court Complex.
