The state Department of Transportation on Monday issued tips for safely traveling in winter weather, including its real time information line.
Among its recommendations were not to follow or attempt to pass a snowplow, maintain safe speed and distance from other cars, schedule extra time for travel, assume bridge surfaces are slippery, watch for black ice, have a cellphone handy to report crashes, never venture from a vehicle if snowbound, pack emergency supplies and inform others of your destination and expected time of arrival.
The news release also recommended drivers use DOTs 511NY traffic information system. Travelers can get real-time travel reports by calling 511 or visiting www.511NY.org.
