Dec. 11, 2002: After about an hour of passionate statements regarding who should supervise the Jefferson County dispatch center, legislators voted Tuesday to let a civilian, not the sheriff, oversee the center beginning Jan. 1. Eleven of 15 county legislators voted to finalize what already had been approved as part of the county’s 2003 budget: a shift in oversight for the county’s 18 dispatchers and their $923,000 budget from the sheriff’s department to the Office of Fire and Emergency Management Services.

Dec. 11, 1987: It was too much, too fast, observers said today. So a record number of South Jefferson Central School District voters turned out Thursday and rejected all three propositions calling for $19.7 million worth of construction.

Dec. 11, 1962: A paralyzing blizzard swept through Northern New York today and clamped a stranglehold on Jefferson County — the focal point of the storm — where up to 30 inches of wind-driven snow sealed off highways, isolated scores of communities and left hundreds of motorists stranded.

Dec. 11, 1937: The body of an 8-pound baby girl, believed to have been born alive shortly before 4 Friday afternoon in a YWCA restroom, was discovered by Moses Washer at 10:45 Friday night when he emptied a refuse can behind the furnace in the basement of the building.

Dec. 11, 1912: County Sealer of Weights and Measures C.H. Bulson of Theresa visited Watertown this morning on an inspection trip through the county. Mr. Bulson reported that he has discovered many frauds among merchants handling apples and cranberries.

125 years ago

Dec. 11, 1887: Some time ago Rhoda L. Eastman was advertised by her husband as having left him without cause or provocation. A week ago, as reported in these columns, she was granted a divorce by Judge Williams, and she is desirous of having the public reminded that the fact of the granting of a divorce is an indication that she did have cause or provocation to leave her husband.

150 years ago:

Dec. 11, 1862: The families of our volunteers — “Messrs. editors: Our soldiers have not been paid. Their wives and children are suffering — suffering for food — suffering for fuel. Mothers almost maddened with anxiety — husbands and fathers away in the army, perilling life on the battlefield and in the camp, and their children crying for bread, crying to be warm, crying to be kept from perishing by starvation and cold!
