HEUVELTON — The driver of an Amish buggy escaped injury Tuesday afternoon when a Buick Enclave crashed into the rear of the buggy, state police said.

The accident occurred about 5 p.m. on Route 812 about 2 miles outside the village.

The Enclave, driven by Julia M. Guminiak, 52, DeKalb Junction, took off the back left wheel of the buggy and damaged other parts of the horse-drawn vehicle, which was operated by Jacob Gingrich, 43, Heuvelton.

There were no injuries to the horse or to either driver, and no tickets were issued.

Mr. Gingrich, who said he had never before been in an accident involving a motor vehicle, was returning to Heuvelton from Ogdensburg and was alone when the accident occurred.

Ms. Guminiak said that she didn’t see his vehicle in the dark, and that the kerosene lamp attached to the buggy wasn’t lit.

Mr. Gingrich said that the light was lit and that the reflective tape on the back of the buggy should have made it visible to traffic.

Trooper A.J. Buck said there is no law requiring buggies to have a kerosene lantern.
