CANTON - Four Bombers scored in double figures as Ithaca College defeated St. Lawrence University by the score of 82-63 in Tuesdays non-conference matchup at Burkman Gymnasium.
Frank Mitchell scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Bombers, who improved to 4-3 with the win. Andrei Oztemel scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Bombers, while Tom Sweeney and Sean Rossi added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Sophomore Brady Condlin of Massena led three Saints (2-5) in double digits but St. Lawrence couldnt overcome Ithacas 55.6% shooting from the floor. Junior Janpeter Brase recorded 14 points and six rebounds for the Saints, and classmate Payton Stahler added 11 points.
Ithaca used 54.5% shooting from the floor and solid defense in the first half to build a 44-28 lead heading into intermission. The Saints opened the second half with a 10-4 run, cutting the score to within nine points (50-41) around 16:00 on back-to-back three-pointers by junior Al Jones and senior captain Kyle Miller.
The Bombers, however, followed with a pair of three-pointers of their own from Oztemel and Rossi, and shot 57.1% in the second half to stretch their lead back up to double digits where it remained for the rest of the game.
Ithaca held advantages in rebounds (35-23) and points in the paint (42-34). St. Lawrence had one fewer turnover than Ithaca with nine, and shot 44.2% from the floor in the game.
Tonights contest concludes the 2012 portion of St. Lawrences schedule. The Saints will be back in action on Jan. 4 when they travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers.
SLU WOMEN DROP CANTON
The SUNY Canton womens basketball team closed out the first semester with a 74-37 loss to St. Lawrence University at Roos House.
The Roos end the first half of their schedule with a 5-5 overall mark while the Saints improved to 4-3.
Freshman Megan Morrow (Gouverneur, N.Y.) made her first career start and responded with a career-high 13 points. Morrow shot 6-for-13 from the field and added two assists and one steal in 33 minutes.
Freshman Brianna Sayer (Hermon, N.Y.) added seven points and two steals for the Roos. Freshman Karyss Terrance (Hogansburg, N.Y.) had six points and six rebounds. Senior Brittany Crump (North Lawrence, N.Y.) had five points. Freshman Ashley Merritt (Watertown, N.Y.) grabbed seven rebounds and senior Kaitlin Myers (Dannemora, N.Y.) scored two points to go along with four rebounds and four blocks.
The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the contest before the Roos rallied with a 7-3 spurt thanks to an inside basket from Terrance and five points from Morrow. St. Lawrence regained the lead on their next position when Kelly Legg worked her way inside the paint for a basket with 16:20 left. The visitors lead stayed at one point over the next five minutes as each team traded baskets at either end, but then the Saints used a 13-4 run over a six-minute stretch that eventually led to a 29-17 lead at halftime.
The Saints shot 45 percent in the second half and used their significant height advantage to pull away from the Roos and secure the short road win.
Kara McDuffee led three Saints in double figures with 18 points and 14 rebounds and Lauren Quattrochi added 13 points and three steals.
Prior to the game, Myers was honored for scoring her 1,000th point, which she achieved at Johnson State College on Nov. 20. Myers, who played two years at SUNY Cobelskill before transferring to SUNY Canton, was presented with a commemorative basketball and a crystal plaque by head coach Bruce Tallon, assistant coaches Shannon LaFave, Regan Howlett and Kristen Roberts and associate athletic director Teresa Minckler.
