Rensselaer Falls bridge will open Friday

RENSSELAER FALLS – After almost seven months of construction, the County Route 14 Bridge over the Oswegatchie River is expected to open Friday.

The bridge was originally set to be completed Nov. 30, six months after the project began.

However, when a sewer pipe running underneath the bridge malfunctioned during a pressure test, contractors asked for a two-month extension.

After additional bracing was applied to the pipe, crews retested its pressure this week, said St. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Toby M. Bogart.

“The test was successful,” said Mr. Bogart. “Crews were out today working on the backfill, and tomorrow crews will be out working on the last bit of guide rails. Realistically, the guiderails are the last hang-up to open the bridge.”

Despite the delay, Mr. Bogart said it was a successful project.

“It was a large project to be completed in one construction season,” he said. “This pipe issue was unfortunately is the only thing delaying the opening, but to extend the project a couple of weeks not bad.”

During the bridge’s closure, some motorists had to travel a nearly seven-mile detour to access the other side of the village.
