OFA Wrestlers down Malone

Strength in numbers is a wonderful asset.

Especially for a wrestling program.

Ogdensburg Free Academy drew strength from the development of its program, which incudes a hefty assist from Ogdensburg Youth Wrestling which is sponsored by the City Recreation Department, in recording a 48-32 victory over Malone on Wednesday to gain a 2-0 start to the NAC season.

The Blue Devils drew three forfeits to the Huskies’ two and posted all of their wins in falls by Tanner LaPiene (106), Brody Sheppard (113), Adam Rickett (126), Bailey Phelps (145) and Nate Sarkin (285). Andrew Cole (182), Justin Pratt (195) and Cody Allen David (160) accepted forfeits.

“Our 120-pounder was out sick today but usually we fill all but one weight class which is really nice. We’ve had years when we had to give up a lot of forfeits,” said OFA Coach Bill Mitchell who was extremely proud of the effort by seventh grader Brody Sheppard who was honored before the match as OFA’s Outstanding Wrestler at the General Brown Dual Meet Tournament where he went 5-0 with four pins.

“Brody Sheppard moved up a weight class and I wasn’t sure how he would do but he wrestled a great match.”

Sheppard escaped a pinning combination early in the match and recorded a pin at 3:01 over Zach Davis. The other falls saw Tanner LaPiene stop Cameron Searles at 1:34, Adam Rickett stop Travis Beach at 1:58, Bailey Phelps stop DaKota Connell at 1:27 and Nate Sarkin stop Nate Sarkin at 0:54.

Malone countered with pins by Austin Learned over Glynn Breen at 132, Fernando Hinojosa Jr. over Tyler Eaton at 138, Jamal Stapleton over Nate Murdock at 152 and a 7-1 decision by Cody Smith over Alex Cole at 170. DaKota Gratton (120) and Keefer Krackenberger accepted the Huskies’ forfeits.

In modified action Chris Cole and Cordwell David went 2-0 with two pins J.T. Lalonde and Dennis Martin each went 1-1.
