Massena wins Salmon River Tournament


FORT COVINGTON - Massena needed a third period eruption to secure a first round win in the Salmon River Hockey Tournament on Friday. On Saturday, the Raiders took the methodical route to gain a 2-0 win over Queensbury and top honors in the matchup format.

Ithaca downed Salmon River 4-2 in the other game of the day.

“We work hard everyday at playing three periods of consistent hockey and we are definitely progressing at sustaining things,” said Massena Coach Mike Trimboli after the Raiders scored in the final two minutes of the first and second period.

“Our big key is to work at minimizing unforced errors.”

Forward Tyler Young was voted the MVP of the tournament after figuring in four goals on the weekend and goaltender Connor Paquin who recorded a 20-save shutout on Saturday and defenseman Brantly Adams and forward Grayson Phillips who scored goals on Saturday were honored with All-Tournament selections.

“Tyler Young is just a good all-around player and an assistant captain as a junior. He was involved in a lot of scoring on the weekend,” said Trimboli.

Adams scored on a first period from Zach Robert and Young combined with Anthony Cortese to set up Phillips with 21 seconds remaining in the second period.

Teddy Nolan stopped 21 shots in the Queensbury goal.

Visting teams posted a sweep at the Canton Booster Club Tournament as Williamsville East rallied for a 3-2 win over Canton and Cicero-North Syracue downed Potsdam 9-2.

In NAC Division II matchup Malone (4-0, 3-0 NAC) downed Tupper Lake 6-2 to stay undefeated on the season.


CNS 9, Potsdam 2: Josh Locey and Jason Cardinell recorded first period goals for the Stoners but a seven-goal second period lifted CNS. Cardinell and Locey each recorded an assist along with Ryan McDonald for Potsdam. Leading CNS were: Eric Hamilton (four goals), Curtis Howland (two goals) and Matt Fiume (one goal , three assists). Alex Johnston had 18 saves in the win.

Williamsville East 3, Canton 2: Tanner Sanderson scored two second period goals for Canton but Hunter Dee’s goal 58 seconds into the third period lifted Williamsville. Brandon Rodee and Cody Moore each produced an assist for Canton.

Tyler Trubish and Chris Winiecki also scored for Williamsville East.

Jon Stone made 30 saves for Canton and Max Battistoni had 12 saves for Williamsville East.

Malone 6 - Tupper Lake 2: Eighth grader Tyler Head scored his first career goal with 7:11 remaining in the game to trigger a Huskie pull-away from a 3-2 lead. Jae Hennig led the Huskies with one goal and two assists, Cory Daniels delivered one goal and one assist, Kelsey Head and Sean Mulverhill each set up two goals and Tler Cooley, Tanner Studlack and Tucker Bartenschalger each netted goals to back Joey Brown’s 17 save goaltending win.

Bryce Guerrette and Jon Kopt scored for TL and Marcus Riche collected 31 saves.
