Carolers spread holiday cheer in Waddington

WADDINGTON – Dressed in woolen mittens and red Santa hats, Waddington residents made their way up and down Main Street singing Christmas carols Wednesday.

Carolers spent an hour visiting homes in Waddington, beginning at the Town Square Gazebo and ending up at the Hamilton Gardens retirement community.

While singing well-known classic holiday songs from “Jingle Bells” to “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” carolers even went inside homes of those who were unable to travel outside their front doors.

“It’s a great crowd this year,” said organizer Nancy Putney.

Many young carolers attended the event. Nicholas W. Burns, 10, said it was his first time caroling. But caroling, he said, got him in the holiday spirit. His favorite song is “Silent Night” because it sounds peaceful.

“I love Christmas because of the snow,” Nicholas said.

Nicholas said he asked Santa for a metal detector for Christmas. He hopes to search for hidden treasures at Waddington Beach and his front yard.

Nicholas’s friend, Zackry L. LaBarge, 12, doesn’t have a favorite Christmas song but he said he also loves the cold weather.

“I love to go ice fishing,” he said. “We usually go when its much colder, though. Like in January or February.”

He said hopes to get a motorboat for Christmas so he can fish and practice for the Junior Carp Tournament next year.

Ella G. Kitzman, 7, said her favorite Christmas song is “Away in a Manger.”

“I love Christmas,” she said, as she ate a sugar cookie and took a sip of hot chocolate after the event. “I love to spend time with my family.”
