HOPKINTON The vacancy created on the Town Council by the death of town Supervisor Marvin E. Rust last month was filled Dec. 17 when the board voted unanimously to appoint Susan E. Lyon to the council.
Ms. Lyon will serve through the end of 2013. Shell have to decide whether to run in November for the remaining three years of the term vacated by Susan M. Wood, who resigned from the seat to become supervisor.
Her dad was town supervisor years ago, so shes somewhat familiar with whats going on, Ms. Wood said. Shes involved in a lot that goes on in the town and is the co-chair of Summer Fest. Shes always around whenever anyone needs her. Shell be a great addition.
At the same meeting, the board learned of another vacancy with the resignation of Gordon O. Jock, which is effective Dec. 31.
Town Clerk Vickie L. French said a replacement for Mr. Jock will be named at the Jan. 14 meeting.
She said Ms. Lyon was chosen from a field of four candidates who submitted letters of interest. Mr. Jocks replacement will come from the remaining three and anyone else who submits a letter prior to Jan. 14.
While Ms. Wood said shes sorry to see Mr. Jock leave, his resignation doesnt come as a surprise.
We always knew Gordie was kind of just filling in, she said.
Mr. Jock was appointed in 2010 after Mr. Rust resigned from his seat to become supervisor.
Hes retired from UPS and he wants to do some traveling, Ms. Wood said. He thought it wouldnt be fair if he wanted to go somewhere for a couple of months to leave us without someone.
Mr. Jocks replacement would serve through 2013 and have to run for the terms remaining year.
Ms. Wood, unanimously named supervisor last month, will have to run for supervisor should she want to finish the remaining three years of Mr. Rusts term.
