MASSENA With the recent storm and continuing cold weather, the 2013 Winter Carnival should have perfect conditions for many activities, Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Michael J. Gleason said.
Weather-dependent activities include the Massena Cup outdoor hockey tournament at the Massena Arena, a snow sculpture contest at the St. Lawrence Centre mall, dog sled races at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center and horse-drawn wagon rides at the Massena Community Center and Hawkins Point Visitor Center, Mr. Gleason said.
The theme for the fourth annual Winter Carnival is Icing on the Snow, and activities begin with a Trivia Night fundraiser hosted by trivia guru Michael Viskovich at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Village Inn. Registration begins at 6 p.m., and the cost is $20 per person or $80 per team.
Mr. Gleason said organizers are looking for auction items for the event. Anyone with a donation can call the chamber office at 769-3525 or Ann Viskovich at 769-9929.
The Massena Cup outdoor hockey tournament hits the outdoor ice the evening of Jan. 18 and all day Jan. 19 at the Massena Arena. Also on the schedule Jan. 19 is a new event: childrens activities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Massena Community Center. Those include crafts, games, a visit by Cubby T. Clown and horse-drawn wagon rides.
Family Feud Night will be Jan. 24 at a site to be determined, and the Nature Center at Robert Moses State Park will offer a moonlight guided snowshoe and ski event at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 25.
The Nature Center will hold three activities Jan. 26 a doggie winter fashion show at 10 a.m., a doggie winter hike at 11 a.m. and a Storywalk with the Massena Public Library at noon.
The St. Lawrence Centre mall is getting in on the activities this year with a snow sculpture festival Jan. 26 and 27.
The 2013 Winter Carnival officially kicks off with opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the chamber office. The Massena senior citizens will hold a luncheon at noon that day at the Massena Community Center.

Feb. 1 activities include a 7 p.m. parade through downtown Massena, with the lineup at 6 p.m. and fireworks from Bushnell Field at 8 p.m. Anyone whos interested in participating in the parade can call the chamber.
The final Winter Carnival weekend, Feb. 2 and 3, features several outdoor and indoor activities, many of them at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center, where the chamber will have its food booth set up. Registration kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 2 at the Massena Country Club for a 5K walk/run. Dog sled races are scheduled to begin between 9 and 9:30 a.m. and run until 3 p.m. at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center.
While the races are taking place, there will be a Winter Carnival Market formerly Ladies Day In as well as horse-drawn wagon rides and Cubby T. Clown appearance from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Visitor Center.
The day rounds out with a Winter Carnival Meet and Greet Dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Village Inn, followed by karaoke at 9 p.m. at the restaurant.
Feb. 3 activities include the continuation of the dog sled races; childrens activities from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Cubby T. Clown from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., horse-drawn wagon rides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and snow candles with the Nature Center at 2 p.m., all at the Hawkins Point Visitor Center; and the Massena Figure Skating Clubs annual ice show at 1 p.m. at the Massena Arena.
