Two killed, three injured in Evans Mills crash

EVANS MILLS — Two women were killed and three people injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle accident on Route 26 in the town of LeRay.

State police identified the victims late Saturday as Laurie DeShane, 43, Harrisville, and Kendra DeShane, 20, Castorland.

Police said that Heather Miller, 17, Carthage, was driving a 2005 Ford east on Route 26 at 9:30 a.m. when she lost control of her vehicle, which veered into the westbound lane and struck a 2002 Chevrolet driven by Laurie DeShane, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Kendra DeShane was taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she died of her injuries.

Two passengers in the DeShane vehicle, Krista DeShane, 18, and Christopher Brundage, 30, both of Castorland, also were taken to Samaritan with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries. Miss Miller was treated at Samaritan for unspecified injuries and released.

The accident occurred near the Gasoline Alley gate of Fort Drum. Military police assisted troopers at the scene. Fire departments from Black River, Evans Mills and Fort Drum also responded, along with six ambulance squads.
