Potsdam, Massena boys surge to convincing interdivisional hoops wins


The Potsdam Central and Massena Central varsity boys basketball teams pulled away to convincing NAC interdivisional road wins to open 2013 on Wednesday.

Potsdam 103, Norwood-Norfolk 23: In a matchup of Route 56 rivals in Norfolk, the visiting Sandstoners reeled off the first 36 points of the game and never looked back for their fifth straight win.

Senior Konnor Bigwarfe sparked the Potsdam offense, firing through five of the 12 three-pointers generated by Potsdam in finishing with a career-high 31 points. Dan Stone and William Coleman contributed 12 points apiece. Nick Vaccaro (3 threes) and Owen Mitchell struck for 11 points each. Shawn Clark and Matt Sutliff finished with nine points apiece followed by Jacob Bryant with four while Travis Stephenson and Duquan Pitts closed out the Sandstoner scoresheet with two points each.

“Our fullcourt press worked really well in the first quarter and we shot the ball extremely well,” noted coach Brooks Bigwarfe after his squad methodically ran out to a 60-9 lead by halftime.

Brandon Sawyer and Dan Devine paced the Flyers with five points apiece. Brett Barkley, Kyle Martens and Kyle Steenburg each netted three while Garrett Waite and Aaron Chandler all finished with two.

The Sandstoners improved to 5-2 overall with the win and will return to action on Saturday with a non-league game at home against Plattsburgh High starting at 3 p.m. N-N (0-9) travel to Brushton on Friday for an NAC North Division game against Brushton-Moira starting at 5:30 p.m.

Massena 54, St. Lawrence 26: In Brasher Falls, the visiting Raiders built a 34-17 halftime lead before going on to complete a regular season sweep over their Route 420 rivals.

Zack Rusaw anchored the Massena scoring with 19 points. Joey LaBelle added 15 followed by Rhoades Tarbell with 12 and Tyler Haas with four while David Phillips and Zach Fregoe each finished with two.

Zane Ramsdell led the Larries with 14 points. Cody Meacham netted eight while Josh White and Jesse Greer closed out the SLC scoring with two points apiece.

Massena (5-4) is slated to host an interdivisonal game on Friday against Heuvelton starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m. while SLC (2-5) is slated to play at St. Regis Falls.

The lone other NAC boys basketball action on Wednesday saw Lisbon fashion a 62-36 West Division win over Hermon-DeKalb.


In the only NAC varsity girls basketball on Wednesday, Potsdam held on to gain a 42-35 interdivisional win at Norwood-Norfolk.

Bre Sapp scored a game-high 13 points as the Lady Sandstoners worked their way to a 17-12 halftime lead and led by double digits in the second half before turning back a Lady Flyer surge for their first win of the season. Shanielle Chambers added 11 points followed by Sarah Vivlamore with seven and Courtney DiTullio with four and Kayla Phillips with three. Kate Hildreth and Katherine Blanchard accounted for the rest of the Potsdam scoring with two points each.

Cadence Hunkins led N-N with a career-high 18 points. Hannah Seguin netted six followed by Carlea Weaver with four and Katie Ames with three while Miranda Langtry and Ayanna Mason both chipped in two.

The Lady Sandstoners host Central Division rival Gouverneur on Monday while the Lady Flyers play at North Division rival Brushton-Moira on Friday at 7 p.m.
