SLC girls hockey team falls short to Albany Academy


BRASHER FALLS - The St. Lawrence Central girls hockey team suffered a 4-0 non-league setback to Albany Academy at the Tri-Town Arena on Wednesday.

Marlene McHale scored the only goal Albany would need with 1:39 left in the first period assisted by Maura Mulligan. Albany went on to score three more unanswered goals in the second period before the teams skated through a scoreless third frame.

Martha Crowley netted the second goal assisted by Mulligan at the 1:07 mark. Hannah Tulchinsky then iced the win with back-to-back goals at 3:14 and 9:07. McHale assisted on both while Crowley helped set up the first.

Steph Peets turned aside 33 shots working the crease for the Lady Larries while Zoe Shannon posted 20 saves backstopping the shutout.

SLC (0-7) is slated to play at Alexandria Central on Saturday at 7 p.m.

In the other High School Girls Hockey action on Wednesday, Lake Placid outlasted Canton 5-4 while Salmon River at Potsdam was postponed.

Lake Placid 5, Canton 4: At the Canton Pavilion, the visiting Lady Bombers built a 4-0 lead in the second period before turning back the Lady Bears.

After a scoreless opening period, Kendra Manning got Lake Placid on the board just 38 seconds into the middle frame assisted by Samantha Barney. Barney then assisted on the second goal three minutes later by Karissa Kennedy and then made it 3-0 at the 8:23 mark assisted by Manning before Morgan Myers closed out the second-period scoring surge for the Bombers off an assist from Paydon Barney just 16 seconds later.

Taylor Marcellus sparked the Canton comeback with a natural hattrick that began with 4:27 left in the second period of an assist from Natalie Giglio and continued 56 seconds later when she finished off a play set up by Nikki Holmes. Marcellus pulled the Lady Bears to within 4-3 with 6:26 left in the game assisted by Blake Orosz before Samantha Barney broke through for what would stand as the game-winner at the 9:52 mark assisted by Manning.

Margret Troiano cut the deficit to 5-4 with 1:11 left in regulation with an unassisted goal.

Elizabeth Burke made 19 saves for Canton while Tanner Stanton worked the Lake Placid crease for 23 saves.

The Lady Bears return to action on Friday on the road against Massena Central at the Massena Arena starting at 5 p.m.
