GOUVERNEUR — Craig J. Coffey was supposed to be servicing automated teller machines. Instead, investigators say, the Russell resident was filling his own pockets.

Now, the former employee of Gouverneur-based B&S Business Services faces grand larceny charges in connection with the theft of more than $2,000, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

Mr. Coffey was employed as a service technician for B&S, which provides ATM sales and service around the region, St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin M. Wells said. Mr. Coffey is accused of stealing the cash between Nov. 4 and Dec. 20, investigators said.

Mr. Coffey, 22, of 13 Lake George Road, Russell, was arrested Friday and charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsification of business records, both class E felonies.

“It wasn’t just once,” B&S co-owner Donna Sturge said Friday about Mr. Coffey’s alleged crimes, in which he is accused of pocketing $2,020 in the course of his duties.

Following an audit, Mr. Coffey was confronted about the thefts and fired the morning of Dec. 21, Ms. Sturge said. He had been employed by the firm for about 18 months, she said.

Mr. Coffey was arraigned before Canton Town Justice Christopher R. Curley and released under probation supervision pending further proceedings.
